Marvin "Moon" McCrary- Three Rivers- Men's Basketball 1979-1980
Marvin "Moon" McCrary, a native of Memphis, Tennessee was recruited by legendary Region 16, NJCAA and Missouri Sports Hall of Famer, Coach Gene Bess at Three Rivers Community College. McCrary was a key member of the Three Rivers 1979 NJCAA Men's Basketball National Championship team where he garnered tournament Most Valuable Player honors. In his sophomore season, he was named Region 16 Player of the Year and was an NJCAA All-American. The Raiders finished 5th in the nation in 1980.
McCrary then transferred on to the University of Missouri where he played for his second legendary Hall of Fame Coach, Norm Stewart. He was named the Big Eight Conference Defensive Player of the Year in 1982 as he started alongside other former Tiger basketball alumni Jon Sunvold, Ricky Frazier and Steve Stipanovich. For a stretch run in the 1981-1982 season the Tigers were NCAA #1 ranked team. He finished the season with averages of 9.2 points per game, 3.1 rebounds, and 1.4 assists per game. His college career ended as the 27-4 Tigers lost to the University of Houston Cougars a.k.a "Phi Slamma Jamma" led by Akeem Olajuwon and Clyde Drexler.
McCrary was drafted by the Phoenix Suns in the NBA draft. After basketball, he returned to Columbia, MO where he resides today with his family and became the first African American police captain in the Columbia Police Department. He retired from duty in 2011.
McCrary's 1979 NJCAA National Championship team was inducted into the Missouri Sports Hall of Fame in 2016 in a special ceremony in Cape Girardeau, Missouri.
